JOANNA DOES KIMMEL

posted May 20th, 2016

Joanna Newsom oh-so-gracefully keeps Divers and "the delvers" afloat with appearances across the USA! Naw, we're not talking about a performance you can attend in person, but rather several you can enjoy on your own time, in the safety of your own personal space, wherever that may be! Things kicked off earlier this week with a conversation between the inimitable songstress and Dave Eggers at San Francisco’s City Arts & Lectures. Next Monday, May 23rd, J-New saddles up with Marc Maron for his fuckin' WTF... (read more)

REPORT FROM THE LLAMAS-SPHERE: HERE COME THE RATTLING TREES HITS THE STAGE!

posted May 19th, 2016

Here Come The Rattling Trees is more than an (amazing!) new album from The High Llamas - as a complete concept, it's actually a full on stage production, a play written by Sean O'Hagan about the Peckham neighborhood in London, England. In this setting, the album's music becomes a freakin' live score performed in real time by The High Llamas throughout the course of the play. First run back in 2014, Here Come The Rattling Trees is about to go for a second run, beginning... (read more)

MAN IN THE MIRROR: DAVID PEARCE RETURNS TO NEW LANDS

posted May 17th, 2016

Continuing the Flying Saucer Attack reinstatement program that began with last year's new release, Instrumentals 2015,and the subsequent reissue of FSA's 1995 LPs Further and Chorus earlier this year, we arrive at the 1997's New Lands and 2000's Mirror.

Following the chilled-out acoustic drafts blowing through both Furtherand Chorus, it seemed that the direction for future FSA musics was clear: increased melodicism with more roots exposed in ever-cleaner productions, right? Uh, no. After what felt to be an... (read more)

A COUNTRY HOUSE, COURTESY OF FAUN FABLES, AWAITS YOU

posted May 16th, 2016

It's been six years since Faun Fables gathered together a fresh new musical offering from their world to ours-universal opinion concludes, that's way too long! Faun awaken; we want a new Faun song and we want it now!! Over the passing of those six years, instant gratification has become norm(core) in everyone's lives; in honor of that, Faun Fables bestow upon you a striking, brand new song off their forthcoming album, Born Of The Sun: they call it, "Country House Waits" but the wait... THE DRAG CITY NEWSLETTER!! MAY 2016

posted May 13th, 2016

STOP

Greetings from yet another record store day in the endless timeline of music, wherein one record store dies and yet another is born with almost every revolution of the Earth (and not due to trends within the industry but instead because of fluctuations of ambition, vision and willingness on the part of the shopkeepers. And beekeepers). STOP. This isn't our first time around the sun (not by a long shot), but truth be told, we're still inclined to continue on... (read more)

SPIRIT NOT WILLING, DOPE BODY DONE

posted May 6th, 2016

That's right - Dope Body are breaking up! Does that mean that Baltimore is GOING to hell, or coming from it? Since 2009, the digitally-shocked power trio fronted with gutter-boy polemics and screamed effusion erupted repeatedly with a SHIT-TON of heat on their four album and live shows played anywhere and everywhere all around the US and Europe. It was after their INSANE 2011 Nupping record that we caught them in a basement show and were blown the fuck DOWN by their energy. It figures... (read more)

FAUN FABLES ALIVE - BORN OF THE SUN!

posted May 4th, 2016

The slapping of tongues and the trilling of flutes: Faun Fables are back among us!

Since 1998, Faun Fables has represented the musical world of Dawn McCarthy, visited in collaboration with her partner Nils Frykdhal. In early times, their wild spirit roamed the streets and hills of the SF-Oakland community and, pilgrim-like, wandered the world, self releasing music before continuing onward to create six albums for Drag City.

Over previous albums, the passions of Faun Fables seemed to be... (read more)

HAGERTY LEADS THE WAY: TIME TO HEAD "COLFAX WEST"

posted May 3rd, 2016

It's a HEX-plosion! With the release of Denver earlier this month and a hex-cellent music video for "Mountain" directed by Fred Armisen, Neil Michael Hagerty & The Howling Hex has raised the bar for every other record that dares to come out this year! Denver is a bonafide pop record, that is of course assuming your version of pop includes having Neil Hagerty at the helm throwing melodies, rhythms and hooks into a schizoid blender and serving it up ice cold!

LE BON VOYAGE

posted April 28th, 2016

Das right! After a "Wonderful" brief tour of the UK with the experimental collective BANANA and not one, but TWO sold out shows in New York and Los Angeles, Cate Le Bon is set to cross the US and Canada to bring Crab Day to the people!

Cate Le Bon has worn many hats, which should serve as a metaphor, huh? Each of her previous records are distinct and anomalous, yet follow a clandestine progression that is mysterious yet ultimately embracing. The spirit... (read more)
