DEAD RIDER PROVIDE A VIDEO GIFT - WATCH "NOT A POINT ON A SCALE"

posted September 20th, 2018

What's that in the chimney? Whoah - its Dead Rider Trio in the house! Their sack is full of new musical gifts, all adorned with the addition of Mr. Paul Williams on vocals. This mysterious figure works in the film industry, was a once the manager of Crispin Glover - and he sounds like it!  His barbed dictation foregrounds the raucous jams that the DRT- Todd Rittman, White Christmas and Matt Espy - pour forth in spades, opening large open spaces in the primal... Life is nothing but problems. It is truly mind-boggling! Check this one out - we've got a record dropping next week from John Mulaney called Kid Gorgeous at Radio City Music Hall. Great record, gonna do just fine! That's not the problem. Last night, John goes and wins an Emmy for Best Writing for a Variety Special - the variety special of the same name! And... ahhh! Couldn't this have happened sooner? We already wrote our promotional blurbs! They've all gone out already and it didn't... (read more)

NEIL HAMBURGER GOES FULL BLOWN POP ON STILL DWELLING

posted September 18th, 2018

In our time of America's greatest dismay, it takes "America's Funnyman" to show the way back to a little bit of love and a whole lot of classic entertainment. With vocal pipes alight and a full studio orchestra behind him, Neil Hamburger is Still Dwelling - and dare we say, better than ever, as he brings new life to some of the greatest songs of his era.

With Still Dwelling, the Hamburger touch is applied to a veritable potpourri of 20th century... (read more)

LONG TRAIN RUNNING FOR EIKO ISHIBASHI

posted September 11th, 2018

Eiko Ishibashi's sixth solo album, The Dream My Bones Dream, rides the rails into a partly envisioned, partly imagined past. It's been four years since Car and Freezer, a time during which Eiko has been steadily working, writing for stage and cinema, playing live, recording and releasing Kouen Kyoudai (Editions Mego), a collaboration with Merzbow; and Ichida, her collaboration with Darin Gray. What a work ethic!

Amongst all this abject jet-setting and debauched gadding about, the music... (read more)

POND SCUM is a collection of recordings made for John Peel’s much-listened-to BBC radio show, at Peel’s request. These are various Palace/Will Oldham/ Bonnie Prince Billy sessions; the lines are blurred. The performances are mostly Oldham solo, with David Heumann singing and playing baritone electric on the songs from one session. Heumann also wrote the liner notes for the POND SCUM record. The cover photos are by Dan Koretzky, and they evoke simply the landscapes from the EASE DOWN THE... (read more)

BITCHIN BAJAS REBAJA THE OBAMA YEARS

posted September 10th, 2018

2009-2016: it was a different time! Today's electronic/drone/ambient household name Bitchin Bajas started humbly as a synthesized solo outlet before morphing into the powerhouse trio made up of Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan and Rob Frye that we all know and love! Now, with the 7xCD Rebajas box-set, you can revisit those halcyon days through the collected catalog of a group moving into their early prime, showcasing the progression of sounds and experimentation throughout the years - on yes, CD format! Packaged in a unique... (read more)

SCOUT NIBLETT RISES IN EUROPE

posted September 6th, 2018

The texts, emails and tweets keep coming in, asking, where in the world is Scout Niblett? Finally, we have an answer: she's surfaced at the perfect time to announce a week-long tour of Europe this November (with a festival date in Portugal this coming Saturday)! Scout Niblett's last record, It's Up To Emma, detonated several years ago - yet the fallout remains, leaving a serious Scout void in our lives that needs filling! WILL OLDHAM UNPLUGGED

posted September 4th, 2018

The songs of Will Oldham have been written most often for the aliases of Palace or Bonny. Their identities, kept necessarily separate from Will's, the songs were written to create a singular encounter, to be shared among those who choose to listen. Songs of Love and Horror is a rare entry in this ouvre: a Will Oldham album, with the writer taking a turn as singer. As befits the nature of this project, the songs are sung and played by Will alone, in a... (read more)

The song "Mindlessness" is a single from SINGER'S GRAVE A SEA OF TONGUES. The B-side, "Blindlessness", was named for the occasion. The song was written and recorded for possible inclusion in a motion picture but was rejected by the filmmaker.  And so, Will Oldham invited filmmaker Kyle Armstrong (for whom he had narrated a short science/art hybrid doc called MAGNETIC RECONNECTION) to Louisville to shoot a short film piece around the song.  In the video, Oldham wears a blindfold.  The blindfold is a...
