Major Stars have reliably delivered the serious heavy guitar goods for over 27 years! And we are reliably stoked to announce their new album, More Colors of Sound, out October 24! The first single, “Blackout,” is out today with a new visualizer to match.
Wayne Rogers and Kate Biggar have been crossing necks dating back to the 80s, with Crystallized Movements’ screaming psych-punk hybrids. Tom Leonard, Major Stars’ current third axeman, has been in the mix almost as long, playing with Kate and Wayne in Vermonster and releasing Luxurious Bags’ amorphous low-fi on Wayne’s Twisted Village label. Nowadays, Kate, Tom, and Wayne are joined by Dave Dougan on bass, Casey Keenan on drums, and Noell Dorsey singing lead. More Colors of Sound features eight new slabs of hard-hitting post-lysergia, their storied guitar trio buzz-and-squallin’ in service of some sweet lyrical melodies — with writing duties shared for the first time ever between Wayne and the team of Tom & Noell!
As a result, we find a song-centric focus on More Colors of Sound. The record is shot through with distorted tones, fevered neck-wringing solos and several extended jammers — but the production overall has a cleaner sound than its predecessor. The angular thrusting guitars on “Blackout” writhe in the song’s head, but grow calmer with Noell’s delicate vocal lead; neck-wrangling step-outs between verses dare her to follow the increasing intensity upward, to greater heights. From start to finish, Major Stars’ latest work finds new hues inside the incendiary approach that’s propelled them so ecstatically in the past. A jar of infinity captured with a quality all its own!
