THE INNER WORKINGS OF JIM WHITE

posted August 19th, 2025

Master percussionist Jim White announces one of 2025’s most unlikely debuts – himself as lyricist and vocalist! Following his first solo album — 2024’s All Hits: MemoriesJim’s deep percussive intuition continues to fuel a new musical vehicle in his life with a new album: Inner Day, out October 24. The title track is out today, with a new music video by Tran.

Inner Day finds Jim dancing ever more deftly with himself with a new selection of songs. Developing meditations on his personal arcana into expressive keyboard feels, he crafts parts as he would on the kit, further interacting with them on drums as well. Jim sings on two standout tracks, “Inner Day” and “I Don’t Do / Grand Central” (featuring guest vocals from Zoh Amba). The lead single “Inner Day” features the first set of lyrics Jim’s ever written.““Inner Day” is about veils and how the unconscious doesn’t follow the waking person's clock,” Jim says. “It doesn’t follow the external so-called laws of temporality and causality. Do you?”

In just the past five years, Jim’s collaborators include Bill Callahan, Cat Power, Daniel Blumberg, Ed Kuepper and Mess Esque, alongside communal experiences in Xylouris White, Jim White and Marisa Anderson, The Double, Springtime, Beings, The Hard Quartet and Dirty Three. Coming forty years into his career, his first solo album felt like some kind of breakthrough happening. “On my first album All Hits: Memories, I wanted to have a keyboard sound to keep the drums company as together they celebrated why some things just ‘hit’ the psyche, why some memories stick,” Jim says. “Later, I found the notes wanted to move more and so on my second album Inner Day, that is what they do.” Working again with co-producer and long-time collaborator Guy Picciotto, Jim travels further into the hypnotic relationships that they captured on his first record.

Additionally, Jim and Guy have joined with Colleen Burke to create the Jim White Trio. They will make their first performance at Bad Bonn Kilbi in Switzerland on Thursday, September 5.
