Last September, Dean Spunt dropped a deep excursion in electronic sound & syntax called Basic Editions. Soon after, Dean hit the road, eager to continue this odd pastime of twisting out new sounds from old-school E-mu modules live and in front of innocent bystanders. And now! Here comes "OCCII Dokie": two new cuts and three fresh modulations of album material from a ripping set at Amsterdam’s OCCII club toward the end of the tour. The whole thing is out now!
Throughout "OCCII Dokie," Dean multitasks between beats and abstract soundwaves, his aesthetic demanding that humor plays a lively role. On tour, Dean evolved his eMu setup, changing the MIDI controller from keyboard to pad, making his options more rhythmic and less melodic. Streamlined, he created two new tracks: "Shallow Flat Head" and "MP7 In Heaven," the former sounding like an entry into alien subspace and the latter pulsing like an android heartbeat. The three live recordings were fed direct from mixer to hard drive, featuring no actual air from inside the room, but the crackling excitement of the performance zigs and fizzes through all the elastic contortions captured there.
Like an air sculpture of triggered wind chimes, "OCCII Dokie" never stops moving, a clubby electronic show with substantial depths, artistic and otherwise. Turn up Dean's new extended play TODAY, available on streaming and Bandcamp!
