DEATH ON CRITERION, FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE

posted July 1st, 2026

Have you truly lived if you haven't experienced Death? That is, the Detroit proto-punk band formed in 1971 by brothers David, Bobby and Dannis Hackney, yes! If you somehow haven't heard the tale of how Death came back to life, you're in luck: the Death-defining documentary, A Band Called Death, is now streaming on the Criterion Channel starting today.

Death came to us all in 2009, when the group — with only one 7" single to their name, until then — FINALLY saw the release of their first-ever full length album, …For the Whole World to See, here on Drag City. Death couldn't be stopped! Soon after, we witnessed Death through demos with 2011's Spiritual-Mental-Physical; then a third album from the vault, III (plus a vinyl single!) in 2014, followed by an album of N.E.W. material in 2015. It was a head-turnin' time to keep up with Death, but what took the band even farther in the public consciousness was the release of Jeff Howlett and Mark Covino's A Band Called Death in 2012. Premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival, the film traveled across the country with much praise, and Death soon followed, eventually bringing their explosive show all around the world. It's punk history you shoulda learned long ago, but there's always time to catch up: flip on A Band Called Death today and dive into Death's domain!
