PRISON BUST OUT THE BIG RIGS

posted June 2nd, 2026

Prison’s new album, Big Rigs on the BQE, pulls up July 31, sounding miles away from last year's Downstate and 2023's Upstate. Their third big one is an improvised rock and roll tapestry rended with gas ‘n guitar pedal on down to the metal; hear a cut of of the first side, "Sunrise Highway," today with a scorching music video by Johnny Celentano and Cliff Elor.

Wheels rolling full-tilt, rhythm churning, guitars screaming and mind-bongo-ling percussion in a boiling roil,... (read more)

ALOHA, DOUG SHAW

posted May 29th, 2026

Our friend and collaborator Doug Shaw passedaway from a stroke at home on Tuesday morning.

Whether you knew Doug from Gang Gang Dance, White Magic, Highlife or by his “Sleepy” nom-du-profession, he was a dude of incredible energies, as capable of bubbling over effervescently as getting deep down inside. We recognized him as a deep-thinker, a real freak and a picker unto himself. When he played the guitar, one felt in the presence of the absolute latest in the name of the real folk... (read more)

EAVESDROP ON THE SECRETS OF BCMC

posted May 20th, 2026

The two-headed, four-handed groove that is BCMC is back! The keyboard and guitar duo of Cooper Crain and Bill MacKay are dishing out their new album Stash on June 26; the second single, "Tête-à-Tête," is out today with a visualizer.

Organ breaks in purple shades tear the prog/gospel/psych/funk roof off "Tête-à-Tête" — and that's the mere prelude to the main event! The keys fly in fresh marine layers; the guitars evoke ancient, classical themes. Two tracks of Bill's string leads call and respond to... (read more)

posted May 18th, 2026

Time stands stunningly still on The Final Painting, the dreamy, elegiac final album from legendary underground singer-songwriter/poet/painter Ed Askew. Out July 31, his posthumous album is a bracing meditation on gay romance and the slow shuffle off our mortal coil, made in the last years of his life with producer Jerry David DeCicca (who worked with Ed on 2013’s For the World).
