Sic Magik!

posted December 9th, 2009

One of the joys of 2009 was our introduction of two fine bands to our roster, Magik Markers and Sic Alps. Magik Markers came forth with the horrifically amazing album Balf Quarry in May. Sic Alps released a long-playing fuzzy-pop-epic singles collection double-vinyl LP A Long Way Around to a Shortcut in August. They’re joining up on tour starting today, and they’ll also have a limited-edition six-song Sic Alps/Magik Markers tour 12” at the merch table. What better way for the band to get... (read more)

Papa M Remembers California

posted December 7th, 2009

East Coasters got a taste, now we look to the west as Papa M performs his 1999 heavy-rock (well, the vinyl's heavy, anyway!) classic Live From A Shark Cage in it's sequential motherfucking entirety.

The shows are happening on these dates:

December 18 Venice, CA @ The Stronghold.

and

December 20 San Francisco, CA @ Cafe Du Nord.

According to Time Out NY, Papa M played "exquisitely looped phrases" at his New York show while all the young dudes felt the loop-love. Dude, are... (read more)

Bill Callahan says "no shit MOJO"

posted December 2nd, 2009

Pardon us if we don’t cross the street to wipe our ass on the new issue of MOJO - apparently they call his new album Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle a bit of the old number two! Pardon us, but it’s not shit, it’s one of the best albums of the year!

Oh wait...maybe they mean it’s the number two best album of the year...huh. Well, to our ears it’s number one. Yes, we’re just taking the piss, MOJO. Coming in silver ain’t... (read more)

Things you could have grabbed - not yourself

posted November 25th, 2009

You heard about the Final Flesh mailorder contest, right? Well, it's all over now - five lucky winners got their slimy paws on some red hot grab bag items (or is it vice-versa: red hot paws on slimy grab-bag items?) picked out by the man whose creations will cream your demon if you let 'em, PFFR's own Vernon Chatman! These items are priceless, not to mention tasteless - just the way we like 'em! Until we get photos back from the lucky winners displaying their... (read more)

Drag City, your source for the Source Family

posted November 23rd, 2009

Over the past couple of years, we've been blessed to become involved in the unearthing and distribution of recordings from Father Yod and the Source Family, the legendary Los Angeles spirit commune from the early 70s. Having a band on the commune provided them with another path to travel in their never-ending search for experience and wisdom, and the record collectors of the world with a series of incredible psych-folk releases to seek after. The first Drag City archival release release, Children of the Sixth... (read more)

Laugh out Lord into a New Decade

posted November 19th, 2009

We can’t put our finger on it, but as we all of a sudden find ourselves winding up the first decade of the new millennium, there’s something about ‘09 that doesn’t feel like the end of a decade the way ‘99 did, or even ‘89 (which was unlike any other year in history, since that was the year of Drag City’s inception). However you define the “00tts,” we personally will continue to be defining ourselves by what we ought to do next...which is keeping our... (read more)

The Drag City Newsletter November 17, 2009

posted November 17th, 2009

Welcome back to good old Drag City – lucky you, you get to go home between updates! Some of us never leave. Like the essentially homeless types that we are, we’re hunkered up, noses to grindstones (each desk comes equipped with one), trying to get down and get ’er done like the true Americans that we are (now it can be revealed!). Music’s our home, really – and before you get any ideas, lyrics aren’t our bible! We’re agnostic at best…but all faiths can worship... (read more)

And on the 9th day, the Lord said, Let there be Flesh!

posted November 16th, 2009

From the demented minds of the PFFR collective ("Wondershowzen," "Xavier: Renegade Angel," anybody?), comes the all-new DVD release Final Flesh. In a world where you think another genre can't be created, Drag City is here to prove you wrong! "Prank Porn" at its best...or at its only incarnation, this release is going to shock the fuck out of you!

And for a few lucky Los Angels, you will get a chance to experience this exquisite torment in your very own flesh. A segment from... (read more)

Six Organs of Admittance Gets Literate!

posted November 13th, 2009

Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance and writer Joseph Mattson have collaborated to create Empty the Sun, a new book-with-soundtrack project now distributed by Drag City courtesy of A Barnacle Book.

It's a novel about what happens when the most important member of your body becomes severed. Hey, don't go there! We're talking about the fret finger of a guitar player. That would be a bummer, right? Well, riding that bummer is Ben Chasny, who creates the musical vibes and moods to complement... (read more)
