At last we know what's behind the mask! Harmony Korine's latest film, Trash Humpers, just can't stay out of trouble. First it got nixed by popular movie rental site Netflix as not being representative of family values. Yeah, maybe 50s family values! Today's domestic situations are much more "liberated" than all that, Netflix! Anyway, that's last week's news. This weeks? Trash Humpers copycat killers. I mean, what would you call this guy? You know David Grubbs the musician. Do you know Grubbs the educator? Sure you do! Didn't those Gastr del Sol records school yer ass-mind on the possibilities of pop music as modern art? And that was the 90s. Since then, he's had an edifying solo career and in addition to being a musician to this very day, he happens to be a professor at Brooklyn College and CUNY as well, where he's forever honing his curricular skills on each new generation of malleable young minds.

Whoa, is it November already? Sweet man, that means it's time for another USA tour, Joanna Newsom-style! 2010 has seriously been a mammoth year for our harp-slinging friend. Like, woolly-mammoth style year, the kind that don't trample the earth anymore. World-wide touring, from the pacific rim through the USA and over to the European motherland, plus the release of the critically-acclaimed triple album, Have One On Me, and numerous television appearances, have kept Newsom busy as all hell. Dwarr's Animals is something we've touted as a lost metal masterpiece, unearthed from the home press vaults of the mid 80s, and it's hard to deny that that's what it is. But if you're simply thinking chugging thrash and technically proficient but emotionally lacking music, perhaps we need to explain further. The sounds here are intensely personal, the mood murky and demented; and while there are certainly riffs, and definitely shrieking solos, the drum n' bass rhythms bounce in rubbery, demented decadence while the vocals... Jim O'Rourke gets his hands dirty in many a contemporary artist's work. Collabs with Joanna Newsom, Smog, and The Red Krayola come to mind, to name but a few. Maybe less known to some of you is his collaboration with, and apparent influence on, the young iCarly actress, Miranda Cosgrove? Hm, yeah, perhaps you remember the Jack Black film, School of Rock.
