PROTEST SONG

posted July 20th, 2020

We know how you feel right about now, over midway through this tumultuous year: another week, another.... oh hold up, wait - it's another Bill Callahan song! With 2020 chock-full of unprecedented, fundamental shifts, it's only fitting that modern day Bill C would tackle the Gold Record reveal with a similarly conceptual yet seriously positive approach!

So, here we meet again. Bill's latest offering, "Protest Song" details a singer-songwriter aghast at the unreality of the... (read more)

A Meditation on "35" by Bill Callahan
by Patty Yumi Cottrell

Bill Callahan is a friend to everyone. A conjurer of mortal joy, he shows us how a song can be a mirror, a map of encounter, a shrine to solitude. We were thirty-five once, all of us, reading books by Herman Melville, David Berman, William Vollman (so many -man/men!), hoping they would tell us how to live or at least why. Why should we live? Listening to Bill's new song "35" I take a walk with... (read more)

HARNESSING THE STORM

posted July 10th, 2020

The sonic resonance of Bill Nace's solo debut Both reverberates through the constant deluge of noisy assaults we've now become accustomed to in this post apocalyptic world. Since it's digital release in June, Both has expanded into ears like hot tar, encouraging continual alertness, to hear and feel each murky tone. With vinyl now available at brick and mortar locations (support your local!) and direct to consumer mail order, Both has the ability to burrow its sound into deep foundations.

The meditative hum of Bill... (read more)

MAGIK MACHINE MUSIC

posted July 9th, 2020

Magik Markers never had the well-turned heels and precious 'tuning pedals' so many bands set their stock with; they were animals. Animals learn. Animals adapt. Animals develop an economy of means. Animals rarely lie, and here, "Isolated From Exterior Time 2020," Magik Markers are those animals! This new EP appeared out of nowhere last week, billowing into full-fi brilliance with prowling guitar, static and delay-whacked vocals. Or, if we may continue the narrative, like a newly discovered species of reptile escaped from some nearby rain... (read more)

STATELESS ON MAIN STREET

posted July 8th, 2020

In the past two decades, Tashi Dorji has traveled a long road. Making several dozen albums and touring the world, playing his guitar solo and in tandem  with inspired others. Gifted with a sensitive and restless ear, he reaches through his guitar to find new sounds. The title of this forthcoming record, Stateless, is about more than just playing one's way into somewhere else. It invites us to perceive hair-raising truth; these are free pieces in more ways than one.

A native of Bhutan, Tashi... (read more)

ANOTHER SONG

posted July 6th, 2020

Just like the responsible, trustworthy father you wish you always had, Bill Callahan has kept his promise and today we reveal another song from Gold Record! No for real, we aren't joking, this sweet tune is actually called, "Another Song"!

The second track off Gold Record, "Another Song" reveals a working man's blues that are lightened by a little love in the afternoon. In the middle of the day, uninspired and back at his homestead for lunch, the narrator decides to... (read more)

MAGIK MARKERS FEEL THE GOOD ISOLATIONS

posted July 3rd, 2020

The twee 2010s weren't for the Magik Markers! Markers only appear in times of duress. They heard you needed them and they came back: "Isolated From Exterior Time 2020."

This ALL-NEW four song digital EP brings back fan favorites Shaw, Pete and Elisa in a re-invigorated franchise, going for broke in the only way they know how: MARKER STYLE. A mood of prog-doom so piercing as to be Crimsonian! As in King? Maybe King Chrome-son? Tunes circle within charred circles, melodies echoing among the darkening... (read more)

BACK IN BACK 2 BACK

posted July 2nd, 2020

It's the first week of July 2020 and we're still getting used to the new normal - namely, that Dope Body are back again, and liver still than we (and you) will ever be. Baltimore's 21st century-style Stooges have rocked themselves alive with an isolation-times mixtape of digi-fuckd, fully distanced Dope furies. Home Body bursts from the gate like a suddenly-unchained beast and as the dust is settling on the fresh abrasions, all that can heard rising above the pain is a chant of "more! more! more!" And... (read more)

SMOOTHIE KINGS

posted June 30th, 2020

It's Summer 2020 and No Age are finally back out on the street, production delays be damned! Forming a wave from which they hang eleven tunes, Goons Be Gone can now be enjoyed and shared in the form of physical media: LP, CD and even cassettes across the world.

And in times like these where the future is so bright that we've gotta wear shades (look it up, Gen Z), No Age's effortlessly raw yet refined new album hits all the sweet spots. Goons simultaneously shows off their roots... (read more)

CALLAHAN'S PIGEONS

posted June 29th, 2020

Hey, we weren't kidding - here's "Pigeons," from the Gold Record we always knew Bill Callahan had in him! The abiding humanity of latter-day Callahan is highlighted by dark plumes of caustic wit upending standards of our everyday life and the songs that celebrate it: the job, the wife, the TV, the neighbors. Bill slips easily into his characters, whether they're easy people or not - and the cross-hatch of their light and shadow is unpredictably entertaining in a uniquely Callahanian manner!
